At least 18 people, including 10 children and five women, lost their lives in a tragic incident when a truck carrying Afghan migrants returning from Pakistan overturned in Afghanistan’s Laghman province. The accident occurred early Saturday morning on the Kabul–Jalalabad highway near the Surkhkanu intersection in Qarghayi district.
Habibullah Mubarez, the Taliban’s traffic director in Laghman, reported that the victims were Afghan migrants who had recently come back from Pakistan. The migrants were on their way from Kunar province to Kabul when the vehicle overturned, resulting in 18 fatalities and 35 injuries. The injured were promptly taken to medical facilities in Nangarhar for treatment.
The cause of the accident remains unclear as authorities continue to investigate. This incident comes amidst a significant influx of returnees to Afghanistan from neighboring countries, particularly Pakistan, where many Afghan migrants are being deported daily. The mass return of migrants has strained transportation networks and public services, especially in eastern provinces serving as key entry points into the country.
