President Donald Trump stated that Iran is interested in negotiations with the United States while Washington maintains military pressure, emphasizing readiness to strike any Iranian site related to nuclear program reconstruction. Trump, speaking after a meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun at the White House, dismissed claims that Tehran is unwilling to engage in talks. He highlighted that Iran desires to meet but stressed the need for meaningful discussions before the US engages.
Trump asserted that US military actions have significantly weakened Iran’s capabilities, stating that if the US withdrew now, Iran would require 20 to 25 years to rebuild. He warned against any resumption of nuclear activities, affirming a strong response to any nuclear-related sites. Trump also emphasized that Iran would not be permitted to possess nuclear weapons, emphasizing strict control over Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, present at the meeting, reiterated the administration’s readiness to respond robustly if Iran disrupts commercial shipping. Hegseth emphasized that Iran has had ample opportunities for negotiations and warned of severe consequences for any attacks on commercial vessels. Trump added that the US naval blockade remains effective, preventing any breaches effectively.
Amid concerns over escalating tensions in the Middle East involving Iran, Israel, and Iranian-backed groups, Trump downplayed worries about renewed Houthi attacks in the Red Sea. He assured that the US would address any such developments promptly, maintaining a stance of readiness to handle potential threats.
