US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order renewing the national emergency concerning Iran and implementing a fresh tariff system targeting nations that engage in transactions with Tehran. The White House stated that the order aims to safeguard US national security, foreign policy, and the economy by enabling the imposition of additional tariffs on imports from any country dealing with Iran. This move is part of a broader strategy to address Iran’s activities abroad, including its nuclear pursuits, ballistic missile program, support for terrorism, and actions that disrupt the Middle East.
The White House labeled Iran as the primary state sponsor of terrorism globally, emphasizing its backing of proxy groups and militias in various regions, some of which have harmed Americans and targeted US troops and allies. Additionally, the administration highlighted Iran’s internal challenges, accusing the regime of prioritizing nuclear and missile programs over the welfare of its infrastructure and citizens. The White House condemned Iran for severe domestic repression, citing instances of protester killings, human rights violations, and violent suppression to maintain authority.
The executive order underscores President Trump’s consistent stance against Iran’s acquisition of nuclear weapons, a position reiterated throughout his presidency and campaign. Building on previous actions such as withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal and imposing maximum pressure on Iran, the President aims to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear arms and counter its influence regionally. Last year, military actions were taken after failed negotiations with Iran, resulting in the destruction of nuclear facilities to impede its nuclear ambitions significantly.
The White House’s broader strategy includes recent measures against other perceived hostile governments like Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro and the imposition of new tariffs on countries supplying oil to Cuba. These actions are intended to send a clear message that dictators and state sponsors of terrorism will face consequences. The executive order will become effective early Friday.
