U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order to hasten research, approval, and availability of experimental mental health treatments using psychedelic drugs. Trump called it a significant reform to address a rising suicide crisis among military veterans. This order aims to fast-track access to innovative medical research and treatments that show promise for severe mental illness and depression.

The directive instructs the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to accelerate the review of specific psychedelic therapies already identified as breakthrough treatments. It also aims to eliminate regulatory barriers, enhance data-sharing among federal agencies, and facilitate quicker rescheduling of approved drugs. Trump emphasized the urgency by highlighting the high suicide rates among veterans, surpassing combat-related deaths since 9/11.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. supported the order, emphasizing the need to tackle the expanding mental health crisis affecting millions of Americans. He stressed the importance of exploring all avenues to help individuals with conditions like depression, PTSD, and addiction who do not respond to current treatments. The administration also disclosed a $50 million federal investment in researching ibogaine, a psychedelic compound showing potential in trauma and addiction therapy.

FDA officials anticipate receiving new applications for psychedelic therapies soon, with potential decisions expected by summer through an expedited review process. At an event attended by veterans and advocates, the transformative impact of these treatments was lauded. Retired Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell shared how the therapy significantly improved his life, while podcast host Joe Rogan highlighted promising data on treating opioid addiction with ibogaine.

This executive order signifies a notable policy shift in the U.S. regarding substances traditionally restricted under federal law. Advocates argue that past restrictions hindered scientific research and delayed potential treatments.
