US President Donald Trump has announced plans to eliminate tariffs on Scottish whisky as a gesture of goodwill towards the United Kingdom during King Charles III’s visit to the United States. Trump expressed his decision on Truth Social, emphasizing the importance of the whisky and bourbon industries in both Scotland and Kentucky. The move comes after lobbying efforts from the Scotch industry to remove the 10% tariff on its products, citing the significant trade relationship between the two countries.
Trump’s decision to lift tariffs on Scottish whisky is part of a broader economic agreement aimed at enhancing market access for key industries between the US and the UK. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer highlighted that the agreement includes provisions to expand trade in sectors such as beef, pharmaceuticals, and ethanol. The move signifies a step towards strengthening economic ties and promoting trade cooperation between the two nations.
During King Charles III’s visit, Trump presented him with a replica of an 18th-century letter from John Adams to John Jay, symbolizing the early diplomatic relations between the US and the UK. Additionally, the King gifted Trump a framed facsimile of the design plans for the Resolute Desk, a historic piece made from timbers of a British ship. The exchange of gifts between the leaders reflected a blend of historical significance and diplomatic gestures.
