US President Donald Trump has announced plans to construct a new class of massive battleships to enhance US shipbuilding capacity and military strength. These battleships, described as the largest ever built, are part of Trump’s strategy to reinforce American military dominance. The ships are set to be the most powerful and heavily armed vessels designed for naval combat, equipped with advanced missile systems, hypersonic weapons, and cutting-edge technology.

Trump emphasized that these battleships would surpass the historic Iowa-class vessels in size and firepower. The construction of the new fleet, named the “Golden Fleet,” is expected to commence immediately, with a projected timeline of around 2.5 years for the initial phase. The President outlined a long-term vision of having 20 to 25 of these battleships in the fleet, starting with two and scaling up to ten initially.

The initiative is not only a military endeavor but also an industrial project aimed at revitalizing American shipyards, generating employment opportunities, and bolstering domestic manufacturing capabilities. Trump highlighted the plan to build these vessels in US shipyards, emphasizing the importance of reinvesting profits into production facilities rather than stock buybacks. The announcement signifies a significant shift in American defense posture, with a focus on enhancing naval power and global deterrence.

Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized that the new battleships symbolize a generational commitment to American sea power, linking naval expansion to border security and counter-narcotics efforts. Navy Secretary John Phelan described the future “Trump-class” battleship as the largest, deadliest, and most versatile warship globally, capable of commanding naval forces across vast distances. Secretary of State Marco Rubio viewed the shipbuilding initiative as a means to strengthen US industrial prowess and uphold freedom of navigation.

Trump clarified that the battleships were not targeted at any specific country but were intended for deterrence through strength. He expressed hope that the ships would never need to be used in combat. The announcement addresses concerns within the US defense establishment regarding aging fleets and competition with China’s expanding navy. While battleships have not been constructed by the US Navy since the mid-1990s, this new project aims to restore American maritime power and shipbuilding capacity.
