West Bengal Police announced the arrest of two individuals late on Tuesday night in relation to the murder of a minor girl named Tamanna Khatun in June last year. Tamanna, a member of a family supporting CPI(M), was tragically killed in a blast on June 23 in Kaliganj, Nadia district. The incident occurred following the announcement of the bypoll results for Kaliganj Assembly Constituency, where Trinamool Congress candidate Alifa Ahmed secured a significant victory.
The fatal blast took place when some Trinamool Congress activists allegedly threw crude bombs at the girl’s residence during a celebratory procession, resulting in Tamanna’s immediate death. Notably, Tamanna’s mother, Sabina Iyasmin Sheikh, contested as a CPI(M) candidate in the recent West Bengal Assembly polls from Kaliganj but was defeated by Alifa Ahmed of Trinamool Congress, who secured a consecutive term.
The two arrested Trinamool Congress activists, identified as Sabit Sheikh and Ziarul Sheikh, had been evading authorities for a considerable period. Acting on specific intelligence regarding their whereabouts, law enforcement officers conducted a successful raid leading to their apprehension. The suspects are scheduled to appear before a district court in Nadia, where the Public Prosecutor will request their police custody.
Following a meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Tamanna’s mother received assurances of justice. Remarkably, within 12 hours of the meeting, the two fugitives were captured by the police. Expressing gratitude for the swift action, Tamanna’s mother commended CM Adhikari for his support and commitment to ensuring justice for her daughter.
During the ongoing Budget Session of the West Bengal Assembly, Chief Minister Adhikari reiterated the state government’s unwavering stance on adopting a zero-tolerance policy towards crimes against women.
