Two children lost their lives, and a 16-year-old teenager sustained injuries in eastern Afghanistan’s Logar province when a gas cylinder caught fire due to negligence by the family. The incident occurred in the Honi Sayyidan area of Pul-e-Alam, the provincial capital. The children, aged 7 and 10, passed away while receiving medical treatment, while the injured teenager remains hospitalized.
The spokesperson for the provincial governor, Mawlawi Mirwais Abdali, highlighted the importance of observing safety precautions when using gas appliances to prevent similar accidents. This tragic event underscores the ongoing dangers associated with domestic gas use in Afghanistan, where a lack of safety awareness and infrastructure contributes to avoidable household accidents. In a separate incident on June 9 in Khost province, one person died and two others were injured in a gas cylinder explosion.
Authorities emphasized the need for vigilance and safety measures to avert such tragedies in the future. The use of gas cylinders or wooden stoves for heating in the absence of modern heating systems poses risks, as demonstrated by past incidents in the region. Despite efforts by firefighting teams to control such emergencies, the threat of gas-related accidents persists in Afghan households.
