The United Arab Emirates (UAE) skipper Muhammad Waseem admitted his team’s shortfall and stressed the importance of enhancing their bowling performance following a 10-wicket loss to New Zealand. In a Group C match at the MA Chidamabaram Stadium in Chennai, Tim Seifert and Finn Allen set a world record with a 175-run opening partnership, securing a comprehensive victory for New Zealand. Waseem recognized the significance of delivering a better bowling display, especially on a supportive pitch.
“We were short 15-20 runs. We need to step up as a bowling unit,” Waseem remarked, emphasizing the need for strategic execution with the ball. He highlighted the critical decision-making process of selecting the right deliveries for specific batters. The UAE captain urged his team to focus on the upcoming match against Canada at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, emphasizing the importance of learning from the defeat and improving their performance.
Looking ahead to the Canada game, Waseem encouraged his team to reset and concentrate on the upcoming challenge. During the match, Waseem collaborated with Alishan Sharafu to lead the UAE’s batting, forming a notable second-wicket partnership of 107 runs. Sharafu’s impressive half-century, including a six off his 39th delivery, showcased his talent against a Test-playing nation. Despite Sharafu’s departure at 55 due to a brilliant fielding effort by Kiwi captain Mitchell Santner, Waseem expressed confidence in the young player’s abilities to continue delivering strong performances.
