UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has emphasized the need for unity and action in addressing the pervasive issue of racism worldwide. He highlighted that racism, stemming from historical injustices like colonialism and enslavement, continues to fuel various contemporary problems such as inequality and conflicts. Guterres warned against the spread of racism through digital platforms, leading to hate speech and harmful stereotypes that can incite real-world violence.
Guterres stressed that combating racism requires collective efforts from governments, institutions, businesses, and communities. He called for the universal ratification and effective implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. Additionally, he urged adherence to the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, which outlines steps to combat racism, xenophobia, and related intolerance on its 25th anniversary.
The UN Chief emphasized the importance of taking a stand against racism daily, advocating for the dignity, rights, and inclusion of all individuals globally. He urged for concerted actions to eradicate racism from society and promote equality and human rights for everyone.
The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1966, serves as a platform to raise awareness and mobilize global efforts against racism.
