Several United Nations human rights experts have raised concerns about the deteriorating health of Pakistani human rights defender Idris Khattak, calling for his immediate release from detention. Khattak, detained for over 6 years, is in critical condition due to alleged denial of necessary medical treatment. The experts emphasized the urgent need for Pakistan to uphold its international human rights obligations and ensure Khattak’s well-being.
An independent medical professional’s assessment revealed that Khattak faces serious health risks due to limited access to medication and medical care in detention. The experts highlighted the government’s responsibility to protect Khattak’s rights to life, health, and well-being. They demanded his immediate and unconditional release to receive essential medical assistance.
The UN experts have persistently advocated for Khattak’s release since his disappearance in 2019. They criticized Pakistan for human rights violations related to his trial, sentencing, and arbitrary detention. Khattak was reportedly sentenced to 14 years in prison by a military court in December 2021 on charges of espionage and leaking sensitive information.
In 2025, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention confirmed Khattak’s arbitrary detention and called for his immediate release. Despite international calls for action, Pakistan has not responded, leading to further concerns about Khattak’s health and well-being. The experts urged Pakistan to prioritize Khattak’s health and comply with its human rights obligations without delay.
