UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher has called for the removal of humanitarian constraints in Gaza. Despite some progress, humanitarian workers still encounter ongoing obstacles, as highlighted by Fletcher during a Security Council meeting. He emphasized the need for improved access to aid and staff, citing current limitations on crossings and delays in receiving critical supplies.
Fletcher pointed out that existing restrictions, coupled with challenges faced by UN agencies and NGOs, are hindering essential support from reaching Gaza. Shortages of fuel, spare parts, and protective gear for aid workers further impede humanitarian efforts. He stressed the importance of safeguarding civilians, including humanitarian personnel, and ensuring unimpeded access to those in need within Gaza.
Efforts are being urged to enhance the operational capacity of key crossings like Erez/Beit Hanoun, Karni, and Kerem Shalom/Karem Abu Salem, as well as to secure access to vital locations within Gaza. Fletcher specifically called for the lifting of Israeli restrictions on crucial items such as medical equipment and spare parts for water and sanitation. He also advocated for streamlined visa processes for international staff and increased medical evacuations to the West Bank.
Highlighting the interconnected nature of humanitarian work, Fletcher emphasized the need for comprehensive support without interruptions. He underscored the urgency for sustained global attention on Gaza, especially in light of recent regional developments. Fletcher stressed the importance of addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza to ensure the well-being of its vulnerable population.
