Union Minister of State for Science & Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, highlighted the importance of promoting grassroots innovators to boost India’s rural economy and address regional disparities. He praised these innovators as crucial contributors to the nation, leveraging traditional knowledge and practical solutions for economic growth. Dr. Singh called for closer collaboration between local innovators, research institutions, and industries to transform ideas into tangible products and community benefits.
A significant rise in startups from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities signals the increasing innovation potential in smaller towns and rural areas. By integrating traditional wisdom with modern technologies like artificial intelligence and food processing, communities have seen enhanced commercialization and income opportunities. Successful initiatives focusing on millet-based products and regional foods have demonstrated the positive impact of scientific support on local economies.
Dr. Singh expressed concerns about the disconnect between government schemes and grassroots innovators due to a lack of awareness about ground-level realities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiatives like “Mann Ki Baat” and PM Vishwakarma have consistently encouraged grassroots innovation and community involvement. A recent workshop organized by NITI Aayog, in partnership with the National Innovation Foundation and Gujarat Council of Science & Technology, brought together state ministers, scientists, policymakers, and innovators to discuss ways to support and expand grassroots innovation nationwide.
