Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Virendra Kumar launched the 29th edition of Divya Kala Mela in Chandigarh. Highlighting the progress made since 2014, the minister praised the shift to the term “Divyang” under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. This change in terminology reflects a broader vision of inclusivity. The enactment of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, and initiatives like the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan have laid the groundwork for accessibility and participation.
Member of Parliament Satnam Singh Sandhu stressed the importance of respect coupled with empowerment for individuals with disabilities. He commended platforms like Divya Kala Mela for providing opportunities for Divyang youth to exhibit and sell their products locally, promoting self-reliance and dignity.
Chandigarh Mayor Saurabh Joshi hailed the event as a celebration of talent and potential, emphasizing the city’s dedication to inclusion. The fair, along with Divya Kala Shakti and Rozgar Mela, showcases the abilities of individuals with disabilities, underlining that disability should not limit but enrich society.
Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Joint Secretary Rajiv Sharma highlighted the economic impact of Divya Kala Melas. These events have facilitated significant business transactions over the years, indicating the growing entrepreneurial capacity of Divyang artisans. The Chandigarh mela, hosting around 75 stalls, aims to foster economic inclusion and self-reliance.
A dedicated Rozgar Mela for individuals with disabilities is set for February 19 to connect them with potential employers. Visitors can explore assistive devices at the ALIMCO stall and witness innovative initiatives promoting empowerment by various institutions.
