Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal Khattar, inaugurated the Bhopal Metropolitan Region (BMR) on Saturday. The BMR, covering around 9,600 square kilometres across five districts – Bhopal, Sehore, Raisen, Vidisha, and Rajgarh (including Biaora), aims to manage rapid urbanization around Madhya Pradesh’s capital. This initiative is set to facilitate coordinated development planning and curb uncontrolled urban sprawl. Minister Khattar, speaking at the event held alongside the Bhopal Metro inauguration, emphasized that the BMR would alleviate pressure on core urban areas, enabling the effective implementation of development schemes. He assured that the Central government would provide full support to ensure integrated growth, emphasizing the framework’s role in enhancing infrastructure, housing, and services efficiency. Established under the Madhya Pradesh Metropolitan Planning and Development Act, 2025, the BMR signifies the expanding footprint of Bhopal, renowned as the “City of Lakes” for its numerous water bodies. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav highlighted that this inauguration is part of various development projects with an investment of Rs 5800 crore, which will be executed in phases, leading to increased economic activities throughout the state. The Bhopal Urban Agglomeration, recorded at about 1.88 million residents in the 2011 Census, now estimates around 2.7 million residents in the broader area, with the metropolitan region accommodating approximately 3.5 million people. Future projections aim to sustainably house up to 6 million individuals in the coming years. Governed by the recently established Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MRDA) and the Metropolitan Planning Committee (MPC), both chaired by the Chief Minister, the BMR focuses on coordinated land use, infrastructure expansion, industrial corridors (like linking Mandideep), environmental preservation of lakes and catchment areas, and safeguarding heritage sites such as Sanchi and Bhimbetka. Bhopal, an administrative, educational, and emerging IT hub, received a significant connectivity boost with the simultaneous inauguration of the Bhopal Metro’s priority Orange Line corridor, featuring modern and eco-friendly facilities. This metropolitan framework signifies a significant transformation, positioning Bhopal as a planned, sustainable, and resilient urban center, harmonizing rapid growth with green spaces and cultural conservation.
