The Khelo India Tribal Games 2026, inaugurated by the Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, have commenced in three cities in Chhattisgarh and will run until April 3. Dr. Mandaviya highlighted that these games signify a significant start for Chhattisgarh as a permanent host, with plans for annual organization in regions like Bastar, Sarguja, and Raipur.
The Minister emphasized the presence of talent beyond urban areas, particularly in tribal regions, coastal zones, and remote parts of the country. He mentioned that the Khelo India Tribal Games aim to discover and support this untapped potential, underlining that sporting abilities are not confined to cities but flourish in diverse regions nationwide.
Dr. Mandaviya stressed that sports offer more than just medals, instilling values like discipline and life lessons, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for fostering a robust sporting ethos in India. He announced the deployment of SAI coaches at the games venue to identify talent through established pathways like Khelo India Centres and Centres of Excellence, providing advanced training for national and international competitions.
The Minister recognized the enduring contributions of tribal communities to India’s sports heritage, citing figures like Olympian Deepika Kumari. He mentioned that the Khelo India Tribal Games will not only promote sports but also enhance tourism and regional development, attracting participants and interest nationally and globally in the future.
Dr. Mandaviya highlighted the significance of transparency and good governance in sports, referencing initiatives like the Sports Governance Bill and the forthcoming Khelo Bharat Niti to ensure fair selection processes, inclusivity, and increased opportunities for women and tribal athletes. He stressed that performance remains the foremost criterion, with selection procedures being fair, transparent, and closely monitored.
Expressing confidence in India’s upcoming international performances, including the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, the Minister predicted India’s best-ever showing at the Asian Games. He noted India’s remarkable sports transformation over the past decade, driven by comprehensive initiatives like Fit India and Khelo India, aimed at broadening participation and nurturing talent nationwide.
Dr. Mandaviya reiterated India’s ambition to host the Olympic Games in 2036 and secure a top 10 global sporting rank by then, aspiring to be among the top five sporting nations by 2047.
