Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that India is set to have four semiconductor plants operational by 2026. This plan follows the recent inauguration of a new facility in Gujarat by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Vaishnaw mentioned that two more plants are expected to be ready by 2027, with the country’s first fabrication unit scheduled for completion in Dholera by 2028.

The newly inaugurated semiconductor plant in Sanand marks the second such facility in India to be opened in quick succession. Vaishnaw highlighted the rapid progress in the sector, noting that the Micron Technology plant was inaugurated on February 28, followed by the Kaynes Semicon’s OSAT plant on March 31. He mentioned that a third plant is slated for inauguration in July.

Vaishnaw emphasized the speed of execution, pointing out that the facility transitioned from foundation to commercial production in just 14 months. He expressed pride in India’s semiconductor ecosystem’s growing capabilities, which have inspired engineers and students nationwide. The minister stressed the importance of global competitiveness, stating that India must excel in quality and cost to establish a strong position in the global market.

According to Vaishnaw, the semiconductor program is being bolstered by the development of a comprehensive ecosystem encompassing machinery, chemicals, gases, and testing infrastructure. He highlighted that around 60,000 young engineers have received training in specialized global tools like Synopsys and Cadence, with their chip design contributions being realized in Chandigarh’s laboratory.
