Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy praised the lifelong partnership between his parents, former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda and late wife Chennamma, as a role model for the youth. Chennamma, aged 85, passed away due to respiratory issues at Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru, drawing condolences from leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.
Kumaraswamy highlighted the remarkable 72-year marriage between his parents, spanning from 1954 until Chennamma’s recent passing. He announced that Chennamma’s body would be available for public viewing at their residence before being taken to Hassan for final rites near the Ranganathaswamy Temple.
Reflecting on his mother’s love and guidance, Kumaraswamy shared how she treated all her children equally and imparted valuable life lessons to him. He emphasized the warm hospitality Chennamma extended to leaders from various political backgrounds, leading to a stream of visitors paying their respects.
Leaders from different political spheres, including former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, visited to offer condolences, showcasing the widespread respect for Chennamma’s caring nature and the enduring bond between Deve Gowda and her. Despite Deve Gowda’s prominent roles, Chennamma always remained a supportive presence behind the scenes, embodying commitment and partnership.
