Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya M. Scindia has introduced a drone-based mail and parcel delivery service in Himachal Pradesh, significantly reducing transit time from two hours to just seven minutes. This initiative, based on feedback from postal workers, aims to enhance connectivity in remote areas with challenging terrains.
The Department of Posts plans to implement drone-based mail delivery on approximately 150 routes in Himachal Pradesh and Assam within the next few months. The first operational route, Mandi-Rehardhar, has already seen a drastic reduction in transit time, making postal services more efficient and timely.
By leveraging drones for mail transmission, the Department of Posts addresses logistical challenges posed by difficult terrains, offers real-time tracking capabilities, and promotes eco-friendly transportation methods. This innovative approach is expected to improve service delivery, boost connectivity in remote regions, and provide better access to postal services for local communities, fostering social and economic inclusion.
In Himachal Pradesh, farmers are already using drones to transport fruits like apples from remote orchards. Additionally, the ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute in Shimla has embarked on developing drone-based technologies for potato crop management, aiming to enhance precision and efficiency in agriculture practices.
