Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the importance of stringent design standards and prototype development to elevate wagon manufacturing quality in India. In a recent meeting with railway officials, discussions centered on reforms to enhance Indian Railways’ freight transportation capabilities. The Railway Board’s upcoming revisions to the Wagon Design Policy aim to foster industry collaboration and the creation of specialized wagons tailored to different commodities.
Vaishnaw revealed that the new policy, set to be finalized within 15 days, will enable industries to customize wagon designs based on their operational needs. Recognizing the diverse requirements for handling and transporting various commodities, the minister stressed the significance of bespoke wagon designs in optimizing logistics efficiency. This initiative follows consultations with industries, trade bodies, and key freight stakeholders, who underscored the potential of tailored wagon solutions to bolster rail transport utilization.
Industry feedback highlighted the success of specialized wagons for products like cement and salt, showcasing the benefits of aligning wagon designs with industry demands. These tailored wagons have not only enhanced operational efficiency but also boosted the appeal of rail-based logistics. Vaishnaw clarified that while industries can propose design modifications, safety compliance responsibilities will rest with the RDSO and the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS). The envisioned reforms aim to spur innovation, attracting new industries to engage with the railway freight sector.
Citing the example of steel coil transportation, which necessitates specific binding mechanisms and dedicated loading systems, Vaishnaw underscored the need for customized solutions to address distinct operational requirements across various commodities.
