The United States has introduced a special edition passport to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence. This commemorative passport, featuring custom artwork honoring America’s founding, will be available to the public starting July 6. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that the passport symbolizes more than just a travel document, serving as a source of pride for Americans abroad.
The redesigned passport, unveiled at a launch event in Washington, is part of a broader initiative to modernize the US passport program. In addition to enhanced security features, the commemorative edition will be presented in a special box along with a certificate of authenticity. Rubio highlighted upcoming digital upgrades that will streamline the passport application process, allowing applicants to complete most of it online.
Under the proposed system, applicants can conveniently take passport photos using their computer or mobile device cameras. Facial verification will be conducted through the department’s security system, reducing the need for in-person visits to photo centers. These digital enhancements aim to minimize wait times and appointments, with further improvements expected in the coming months. Future passport editions may include QR codes linking to videos explaining key moments in American history.
Rubio mentioned presenting the first commemorative passport to President Donald Trump, who expressed admiration for the design. The State Department emphasized that the commemorative passport reflects America’s shared history and commitment to progress for the next 250 years. It honors fundamental values like liberty and unity while upholding the advanced security standards that define the US passport.
