Uruguay’s Ambassador to India, Alberto Antonio Guani Amarilla, expressed support for strengthening ties between the two countries. He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “very influential leader” for highlighting Global South issues on the world stage. India is set to open an Embassy in Montevideo later this year, marking a significant step in the 75-year-old relationship.
Ambassador Amarilla emphasized the importance of the growing relationship between India and Uruguay. He mentioned that India’s plan to establish an Embassy in Montevideo in June signifies a new chapter in their ties. Currently, the Embassy of India in Buenos Aires serves as the diplomatic representation for Uruguay.
Uruguay is considering easing visa restrictions for Indian travelers to facilitate visits to the country. While no formal request has been made by India regarding this matter, discussions are expected to take place during political consultations in Delhi in March. Ambassador Amarilla also voiced Uruguay’s backing for India’s bid to secure a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
