The US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, emphasized the robust nature of the India-US relationship during the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) Leadership Summit. Gor dismissed claims of weakening ties, pointing to the expanding cooperation in trade, defense, technology, and people-to-people connections. He underscored the commitment of both governments to enhance collaboration across various key sectors.
Gor expressed optimism about the potential for collaboration between the two countries, highlighting the broad spectrum of opportunities available. He emphasized that the relationship between the United States and India spans diverse sectors, including AI, technology, and defense, with immense untapped potential for growth. President Donald Trump’s strong emphasis on the strategic partnership with India was also highlighted by Gor.
The ambassador noted India’s significance as one of the United States’ trusted partners, citing its involvement in initiatives like PAXSilica. He highlighted the deepening economic ties, with bilateral trade witnessing a substantial increase from 20 billion to 220 billion over the past two decades. Gor also pointed out the ambitious bilateral trade goal set by President Trump and Prime Minister Modi at $500 billion in the coming years.
In terms of defense cooperation, Gor mentioned that India engages in more military exercises with the United States than any other country, reflecting the strong defense ties between the two nations. Looking ahead, he emphasized the critical role of the next two years in shaping the future trajectory of the partnership, urging a long-term perspective for sustained growth and collaboration. The US Embassy in New Delhi’s focus on tangible outcomes and fostering commercial opportunities was also highlighted by Gor.
India and the United States have significantly expanded their strategic partnership, moving beyond defense and diplomacy to include critical and emerging technologies, artificial intelligence, clean energy, and resilient supply chains. The bilateral relationship, described as a defining strategic alliance of the 21st century, is reinforced by a vibrant Indian diaspora in the US and increasing business-to-business engagements. Both countries are working towards a bilateral trade target of $500 billion while enhancing coordination in the Indo-Pacific region through initiatives like the Quad.
