US House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized President Donald Trump’s administration for increasing living costs, mishandling healthcare, and involving the US in what he termed a costly war in Iran. Jeffries emphasized that House Democrats are focused on addressing affordability issues and opposing the Republican budget reconciliation package. He highlighted the failure of Trump’s promises to lower costs, pointing out the rising expenses faced by American families.
Jeffries pointed to the escalating prices of groceries, housing, healthcare, and utilities, stating that the overall cost of living in the US has become unmanageable for many working families. He attributed the increased household expenses to Trump’s tariff policies and criticized the Republican healthcare approach for driving up health insurance costs. Additionally, Jeffries linked the surge in fuel prices to the administration’s military actions in Iran.
The Democratic leader expressed strong opposition to the Republican reconciliation bill, advocating for the use of taxpayer money to reduce costs rather than allocating funds to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Jeffries also condemned Trump’s appointment of Bill Pulte as Acting Director of National Intelligence, labeling him as unqualified and a political appointee. When questioned about supporting foreign surveillance authorities with Pulte in office, Jeffries firmly stated that Democrats would not support such extensions.
Throughout the news conference, Jeffries portrayed Republicans as neglecting voters’ concerns and blindly supporting Trump’s agenda. He criticized House Republicans for their alignment with Trump’s policies and predicted potential losses for them in the upcoming elections. Looking ahead, Jeffries outlined the Democratic agenda centered on affordability and healthcare, emphasizing the need to lower living costs and reform the healthcare system. He also commented on Trump’s attendance at a New York Knicks game, questioning the president’s motives and suggesting it was a publicity move during the NBA finals.
