China’s increasing influence at the United Nations has raised concerns among US lawmakers. They highlighted Beijing’s efforts to expand its presence within the global body, particularly through staffing, funding, and diplomatic initiatives. Representative Jared Moskowitz emphasized that US withdrawal could further empower China, as it steps in with more resources and influence in areas where the US scales back.
Lawmakers pointed out China’s strategy of embedding personnel in UN agencies, with thousands of interns placed strategically to later assume full-time roles, bolstering China’s institutional sway. Additionally, China’s significant global spending, especially in developing regions, has enabled it to garner diplomatic leverage, controlling more votes in various regions compared to the US.
While both Republicans and Democrats acknowledge the challenge posed by China’s actions, they differ on the appropriate response. Some Republicans advocate for reducing US funding and involvement unless reforms are enacted, while others suggest using US financial contributions more assertively to counter China’s influence. Witness Brett Schaefer noted that the US, as the largest contributor to the UN, possesses substantial leverage, but its application is key to effectively shaping outcomes.
Experts caution against US disengagement, warning that it could inadvertently allow China to expand its influence unopposed. Maintaining active US participation, according to Peter Yeo, is crucial for influencing UN decisions and fostering reforms. China’s expanding role at the UN reflects a broader trend of heightened geopolitical competition within global institutions, with Beijing’s multifaceted approach aiming to shape international norms.
The United Nations, founded in 1945 and comprising 193 member states, plays a pivotal role in global diplomacy, peacekeeping, and humanitarian efforts. Historically, the US has been the primary financial contributor to the UN, while China has progressively increased its involvement over the past two decades.
