US Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticized Iran for breaching international law and disrupting global trade by targeting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Rubio expressed concerns about the impact of these actions on the world during a meeting with New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters at the US State Department. He mentioned that Washington is awaiting further developments regarding potential diplomatic talks with Tehran.

Rubio highlighted the escalating tensions in the West Asia region and the safety risks faced by shipping lanes crucial for global energy supplies. He emphasized Iran’s disregard for global regulations and norms, labeling the Iranian leadership as supporters of terrorism. Rubio underscored the need to address these issues as a threat to international commerce and maritime security, rather than just a bilateral conflict.

During a press briefing, Rubio dismissed comments from Cuba’s President Miguel Diaz-Canel about potential retaliation against US operations in Cuba. Rubio downplayed the remarks, emphasizing that he does not pay much attention to them. The interaction took place before Rubio’s meeting with Peters, where discussions on regional security and global stability were anticipated.
