US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated the Trump administration’s dedication to Southeast Asia, pledging significant strategic investments for the region. Speaking at the ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference in Manila, Rubio emphasized the importance of ASEAN as a key engagement platform in the Indo-Pacific region. He highlighted concerns over Iran’s activities in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route for oil transport, expressing the US commitment to diplomacy while criticizing Iran for not upholding agreements.

Rubio underscored the administration’s skepticism about Iran’s willingness to engage in meaningful negotiations, stating that the US is prepared to protect its interests and those of its allies. He emphasized the broader implications of the Iran dispute, stressing the principle of international maritime transit rights. Rubio warned against allowing any nation to control vital waterways like the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing the significance of freedom of navigation for global economic stability.

In addition to addressing security concerns, Rubio announced a substantial increase in American economic involvement in Southeast Asia. He revealed plans for $2.5 billion in US government strategic investments in the region, emphasizing that this initiative serves American national interests. Rubio also highlighted the approval of $1.5 billion in new investments to support various sectors such as aviation infrastructure, energy security, and supply chains in Southeast Asia. He affirmed the US commitment to supporting ASEAN countries in demining efforts and advancing energy and infrastructure development in the region.
