US Secretary of State Marco Rubio encountered tough questioning from senators regarding presidential war powers, NATO unity, and America’s international position. The discussions centered on the legality and lasting impacts of US involvement in Venezuela. Rubio defended the operation that resulted in Nicolas Maduro’s arrest, emphasizing that it did not constitute an act of war. He stated, “We just don’t believe that this operation meets the constitutional definition of war.”

Senator Rand Paul expressed concerns about potential dangerous precedents, to which Rubio responded by affirming that the US will always prioritize its national interests and safeguard its system. Rubio acknowledged existing tensions concerning congressional consultation, highlighting that this issue has been a point of contention across multiple administrations.

Rubio also supported President Trump’s stance on NATO while recognizing strains within the alliance. He emphasized the need for NATO to be reimagined, particularly in terms of capabilities, without altering its fundamental purpose. Rubio underscored the increased reliance of European allies on US military power due to declining defense spending, stating, “Without the United States, there is no NATO.”

Addressing concerns about Greenland, Rubio clarified that the US is pursuing diplomatic solutions rather than resorting to force. He reassured that there are no plans for military intervention in Venezuela, emphasizing that the US military presence in the country is limited to marine guards at an embassy.
