The United States has initiated legal action to revoke the citizenship of an Indian-born man found guilty of rape and abduction. The Justice Department revealed that Gurmeet Singh allegedly concealed his violent crimes during the naturalization process. Singh, a former taxi driver, was accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a female passenger after driving her to a secluded area where he assaulted her at knifepoint.
Singh reportedly misrepresented crucial information on his naturalization application, failing to disclose his criminal past. Despite these serious allegations, he successfully obtained US citizenship in 2011. Subsequently, he was convicted of Rape in the First Degree and Kidnapping in the Second Degree, receiving a 20-year prison sentence in New York.
Attorney General Pamela Bondi emphasized the importance of upholding the integrity of American citizenship, stating that individuals who deceive the system will face consequences. Assistant Attorney General Brett A. Shumate of the Justice Department’s Civil Division expressed that Singh’s actions highlight the need to rectify the injustice of granting citizenship to those who engage in criminal activities.
US authorities are acting under the Immigration and Nationality Act, which allows for the revocation of naturalized citizenship obtained through fraudulent means or by concealing vital information.
