US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has voiced support for President Donald Trump’s tariff approach, citing its role in bolstering the US negotiating stance with various trade partners, including India. In an interview with The New York Times, Greer highlighted the policy’s effectiveness despite facing legal and economic critiques.
Greer emphasized the administration’s swift action in response to the country’s expanding trade deficit, viewing it as an urgent economic issue. He credited the imposition of broad tariffs for facilitating new trade discussions with multiple nations.
According to Greer, the US has successfully engaged in trade negotiations with countries such as the United Kingdom, the European Union, Indonesia, India, and Japan. Despite legal setbacks, he expressed no remorse over the strategy, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to uphold the trade agenda.
Greer affirmed the administration’s commitment to transforming longstanding US trade policies, emphasizing positive outcomes in reducing the trade deficit, promoting reshoring, enhancing wages, and other aspects. He clarified that the objective was not to revolutionize global trade but to recalibrate trade terms in favor of America.
Rejecting claims that tariffs were politically unsustainable, Greer advocated for evaluating the policy’s impact over the long term. He highlighted the policy’s focus on supporting wages, safeguarding manufacturing, and agricultural sectors, anticipating positive results for the American populace in due course. Greer acknowledged the gradual nature of rebuilding manufacturing capacity but noted promising indicators of increased factory investments and improved industrial productivity.
