Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader and MP Thol. Thirumavalavan has expressed worries about his party’s ongoing struggle to secure sufficient electoral space despite 25 years in politics. Thirumavalavan highlighted the structural and social obstacles hindering the party’s growth during a Facebook Live session with party members. He mentioned that despite their long presence, contesting elections remains a tough task due to limited adaptability and unsupportive social dynamics.
Thirumavalavan pointed out the resistance faced by the party in becoming a robust political entity, with many opposing its growth. He noted the lack of encouragement or backing for their advancement. Despite these challenges, he acknowledged the VCK’s resilience and its emergence as a crucial political force in Tamil Nadu.
Addressing internal hurdles, Thirumavalavan discussed the party’s struggles in securing seats within alliances and raising funds. As part of the DMK-led alliance with over 20 parties, VCK receives a restricted number of constituencies for contesting. Thirumavalavan highlighted the pressure in candidate selection when the party is allocated fewer than 10 seats, emphasizing the democratic process followed for candidate selection.
Thirumavalavan dismissed criticisms of “outsider candidates” by citing successful instances of candidates from various regions winning elections. He stressed the importance of internal discipline and autonomy in decision-making processes. Despite the challenges, he affirmed the party’s commitment to democratic values and its efforts to expand its political presence, drawing parallels with Communist parties in candidate selection and funding models.
