Vellappally Natesan of the SNDP Yogam and G. Sukumaran Nair of the Nair Service Society (NSS) are in the spotlight as they push for unity between the two major Hindu social groups in Kerala. Sukumaran Nair recently extended a warm welcome to the SNDP Yogam at the NSS headquarters in Perunna, expressing confidence in the SNDP-NSS unity and dismissing political concerns.
Emphasizing the significance of the alliance, Sukumaran Nair assured that the NSS would maintain its core values throughout the unity process. He highlighted that this initiative reflects his personal belief and will be presented for official approval to the NSS Director Board and the top decision-making body.
Efforts to unite the SNDP Yogam and NSS are not new. Previous attempts between 2012 and 2014 to form a “Hindu Grand Alliance” led by Vellappally and Sukumaran Nair faced challenges due to disagreements over issues like the Devaswom Recruitment Board and caste-based reservation policies. Despite past tensions, both leaders are now aligned in their efforts, signaling a potential shift in social dynamics among Kerala’s Hindu communities.
Vellappally Natesan confirmed plans for a meeting with Sukumaran Nair to progress the unity agenda, with ongoing discussions overseen by his son, Tushar Vellappally. Both leaders have expressed strong organizational support for the unity initiative and dismissed criticisms from political circles. The emerging SNDP-NSS alliance could have far-reaching implications on Kerala’s socio-political landscape, especially with elections approaching and shared concerns regarding Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan.
