Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was captured by US forces at a military base in his country and subsequently locked up in a federal jail in New York. In a video released by the White House, Maduro, once the undisputed ruler of Venezuela, was seen in a brown uniform, handcuffed, and escorted by DEA officers.
Accompanied by his wife Cilia Flores, Maduro was flown to a heliport in downtown Manhattan after landing at the Stewart Air National Guard Base. Facing narco-terrorism charges, they were first taken to the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) office amid tight security before being transferred to the Metropolitan Detention Centre (MDC) in Brooklyn.
The charges against Maduro and Flores include narco-terrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine, and possession of weapons. President Donald Trump hinted at the possibility of their trial being moved to Miami, a city with a significant Venezuelan exile population. The capture of Maduro was met with jubilation among many Venezuelans in the US.
