Veteran fast bowler Shabnim Ismail has come out of retirement to join the South African women’s cricket team for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 in England and Wales. With 113 T20I appearances and a record 123 wickets, Ismail brings a wealth of experience to the squad led by Laura Wolvaardt. The Proteas have also included Marizanne Kapp, Dané van Niekerk, and Karabo Meso in the 15-member squad after their recovery from various setbacks.
Young all-rounder Kayla Reyneke has earned her first senior World Cup call-up, showcasing promising performance during the previous season. The squad also comprises players like Tazmin Brits, Suné Luus, Annerie Dercksen, Nadine de Klerk, and Chloé Tryon. The bowling attack will be spearheaded by Ayabonga Khaka, Tumi Sekhukhune, and Nonkululeko Mlaba.
Proteas Women’s head coach Mandla Mashimbyi expressed confidence in the team’s preparation for the World Cup, highlighting the return of key players like Ismail, Kapp, van Niekerk, and Meso. The team aims to approach the tournament with a focus on continuous improvement and taking each game as it comes. South Africa is set to depart for England on May 25 for a training camp ahead of their opening match against Australia on June 13 in Manchester.
