Veteran Communist leader R. Nallakannu, a prominent figure in Tamil Nadu’s political arena and a lifelong member of the CPI, died at the age of 101 at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai. He had been receiving intensive treatment at the hospital and passed away at 1.55 p.m. after battling severe respiratory distress since his admission on February 1. Nallakannu’s health had been closely monitored by a multidisciplinary medical team during his 24-day stay at the hospital.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and various political leaders visited the hospital to inquire about Nallakannu’s health in recent weeks. Leaders from different political parties expressed deep sorrow at his demise, recalling him as a symbol of integrity, ideological dedication, and simplicity. Born in 1925, Nallakannu, hailing from a modest farming family in Thiruvaikundam, was drawn to activism during his college days, leading to his involvement in the Quit India Movement against British rule.

Inspired by Communist principles, Nallakannu joined the CPI at the age of 18 in 1943, embarking on a political journey that lasted over eight decades. He was a staunch advocate for the rights of farmers, agricultural laborers, and the marginalized sections of society. Nallakannu’s legacy includes leading significant movements in the Nanguneri region for farmers’ rights and his unwavering stand against untouchability and social injustices.

Throughout his life, Nallakannu championed various causes, including prisoners’ rights and access to education in jails. He served as the Tamil Nadu State Secretary of the CPI for 13 years, providing crucial leadership during challenging political times. Despite contesting in multiple Assembly elections, Nallakannu prioritized public activism over electoral victories, reflecting his commitment to social causes over personal gains.

Recognized for his contributions, Nallakannu received accolades such as the Thagaisal Tamil Award and the Ambedkar Award, most of which he donated to the party and workers’ unions. Known for his humility and dedication, Nallakannu lived a modest life, devoid of personal wealth, and returned funds collected in his honor. While his physical presence may have departed, his ideals and dedication to social justice are set to inspire future generations.
