Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan led the sixth convocation ceremony of AIIMS Rishikesh in Uttarakhand, emphasizing the role of new AIIMS facilities in enhancing healthcare access and medical education. He highlighted the importance of healthcare as a public trust and the significant contribution of medical professionals to nation-building. Radhakrishnan encouraged graduates to focus on preventive care, rural outreach, research, and innovation, while upholding values like empathy, integrity, and service.
Reflecting on the spiritual and cultural significance of Rishikesh as a global center for reflection and healing, the Vice-President noted how this setting added depth to the convocation ceremony. He stressed that such events mark the transition from years of hard work and sacrifice to a greater responsibility towards society and the nation. Radhakrishnan urged the new graduates to approach their professional duties with dedication and a strong sense of purpose.
In the context of the pandemic challenges, the Vice-President commended India’s resilience, innovation, and commitment under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He highlighted the country’s extensive vaccination campaign, which provided free vaccines to over 140 crore citizens, ensuring equitable healthcare access, particularly in underserved areas. Radhakrishnan emphasized that Indian scientists developed vaccines not for profit but for the benefit of humanity.
Upholding India’s global responsibility, the Vice-President mentioned the ‘Vaccine Maitri’ initiative, through which vaccines were shared with over 100 countries. He described this initiative as a reflection of the ethos of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (The World is One Family), showcasing India’s compassionate and responsible global role. Radhakrishnan also underscored the importance of expanding healthcare infrastructure, stating that good governance involves understanding and meeting the people’s needs.
Notable figures present at the convocation included Uttarakhand Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (retired), Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel, AIIMS Rishikesh President Raj Bahadur, and other dignitaries.
