Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan visited the Harijan Sevak Sangh at Gandhi Ashram in New Delhi to inaugurate the Mahadev Desai Library Extension, emphasizing the importance of knowledge for social change. He also toured the Kasturba Museum within the Ashram, where Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi resided in the 1930s and 1940s. The Vice President described the visit as emotionally moving, reflecting on the simple and dedicated lives led by India’s leaders.
During the visit, the Vice President released the book “Age of Enlightenment: Mahatma Gandhi’s Vision” by Prof. Dr. Sankar Kumar Sanyal and paid respects to Mahatma Gandhi, Thakkar Bapa, and Vinoba Bhave. Reflecting on Gandhi’s transformation, he highlighted how Gandhi’s adoption of traditional attire symbolized his commitment to the masses and swadeshi principles. The Vice President praised the Harijan Sevak Sangh’s efforts in eradicating social issues like untouchability through education and service.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice President emphasized the importance of character over birth status and commended the Harijan Sevak Sangh for its role in supporting leaders like former President K.R. Narayanan. He stressed the reciprocal relationship between individuals and society, advocating for service as a moral duty and a means of nation-building. Additionally, he acknowledged Gujarat’s contributions to India, mentioning Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
