Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan honored Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee at the Uprashtrapati Bhawan on what would have been the late leader’s 125th birthday. Radhakrishnan highlighted Mookerjee’s significant impact on India’s education, politics, and democracy. He praised Mookerjee as a distinguished educationist, visionary statesman, and nation-builder who played key roles in various spheres, including as a Vice-Chancellor, member of the Constituent Assembly, and founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh.
Radhakrishnan emphasized Mookerjee’s dedication to national unity and integrity, noting his ultimate sacrifice in Jammu & Kashmir in pursuit of full integration with India. He underscored Mookerjee’s ongoing influence in inspiring generations toward a strong, united, self-reliant, and developed India. Radhakrishnan also highlighted Mookerjee’s vision of equality for all citizens under a unified constitutional framework, citing the abrogation of Article 370 as a testament to his commitment to national integration.
Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, a significant figure in Indian politics, was born on July 6, 1901, in Kolkata. Known for his opposition to Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, Mookerjee considered it a threat to national unity. His visit to Kashmir in 1953 and subsequent hunger strike against laws restricting Indian citizens in the region led to the revocation of certain regulations, although his untimely death under mysterious circumstances followed.
