The much-anticipated release of Vijay’s Jana Nayagan has been officially postponed in India, with the film’s January 9 theatrical debut now cancelled. The announcement was made by KVN Productions just two days before the scheduled release date.
Production House Announces Delay
KVN Productions shared the update on social media platform X, stating: “It is with a heavy heart that we share this update with our valued stakeholders and audiences. The release of Jana Nayagan, eagerly awaited on January 9, has been postponed due to unavoidable circumstances beyond our control.”
The production house added: “We deeply understand the anticipation, excitement, and emotions surrounding this film, and this decision has not been an easy one for any of us. The new release date will be announced at the earliest. Until then, we humbly request your patience and continued love.”
CBFC Certification Issues Behind Postponement
The delay stems from ongoing certification challenges with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). On Wednesday, the Madras High Court reserved its order on the film’s release and instructed the CBFC to form a fresh committee to review the film.
The producers had approached the court after failing to obtain the censor certificate despite submitting the film over a month earlier. The CBFC had suggested cuts and muted dialogues on December 19, but certification remains pending.
January 9 Shows Cancelled, Refunds Announced
All Friday screenings of Jana Nayagan scheduled for January 9 have been cancelled across Indian theatres. Victory Cinema in Karnataka confirmed the cancellation, stating that online ticket buyers will receive automatic refunds to their accounts, while counter purchases can be refunded in person from January 8.
Global Release Impacted by India Delay
The postponement has extended beyond India, with international distributors in the UK, North America, Canada, and Malaysia also confirming delays. Ahimsa Entertainment, the film’s UK distributor, announced that the international release has been postponed.
Since CBFC clearance for the Tamil version is mandatory before dubbed versions in Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada can be approved, the certification issue has stalled the entire global rollout.
About Jana Nayagan
Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan features an ensemble cast including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani, and Narain. The film is marketed as Vijay’s final cinematic project before his full-time entry into politics.
The multilingual release now faces an uncertain timeline, with fans across countries awaiting the announcement of a new release date. The production team has assured audiences that updates will be shared at the earliest.
As the legal proceedings continue and the fresh CBFC committee reviews the film, Vijay’s supporters remain hopeful for a swift resolution that will bring Jana Nayagan to theatres soon.
