Vijender Singh expressed disappointment towards the Punjab government for acknowledging sprinter Gurindervir Singh’s accomplishments only after his remarkable success. Singh emphasized the importance of providing support to athletes during their struggles rather than solely after they achieve medals and recognition. He highlighted Gurindervir’s statements in a recent interview where the runner mentioned the lack of access to a national-level stadium and insufficient government support despite being employed by the government.
Singh pointed out that although Gurindervir received a government job, he was not provided with the necessary environment for training and preparation. The Olympic medallist criticized the government’s delayed recognition, stating that athletes require support throughout their journey, especially during challenging times. Singh emphasized the significance of backing athletes during their struggles rather than solely celebrating their victories.
Gurindervir Singh, aged 25, made headlines by setting a new national record during the National Senior Athletics Federation Competition 2026 in Ranchi. Representing Reliance, the sprinter from Punjab clocked an impressive 10.09 seconds to secure the men’s 100m title. He initially broke the previous national record of 10.18 seconds set by Animesh Kujur by clocking 10.17 seconds in the opening semifinal heat.
Following Gurindervir’s record-breaking performance, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann congratulated the athlete for his exceptional achievement. Mann praised Gurindervir for his gold medal win in the 100-meter race at the Federation Cup in Ranchi, where he set a new national record with a time of 10.09 seconds. Gurindervir became the first Indian athlete to complete the 100-meter race in less than 10.10 seconds, bringing pride to Punjab by achieving two national records in quick succession.
