The Mauganj district in Madhya Pradesh experienced a violent incident during Holi celebrations, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to nearly a dozen individuals. The clash arose from a longstanding dispute between two families over alleged ‘love affairs’. The altercation escalated when members of the Saket family, reportedly intoxicated, attacked a youth named Puran Lal Patel, accused of being involved with a girl from their community.
The situation turned violent as both sides engaged in physical confrontation, using sticks and stones, until intervention from nearby villagers and the Hanumana police. Tragically, Puran’s father, Raghuveer Patel, and his brother, Sandeep Patel, sustained serious injuries, with Raghuveer succumbing to his wounds en route to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital. Several others, including women, were also injured and are receiving medical treatment at the same hospital.
The incident, which dates back nearly two years, has sparked demands for justice from the Patel community, who gathered at the police station seeking punishment for the perpetrators. Despite efforts by police and administrative officials to mediate and maintain control, heavy security measures have been implemented to prevent further escalation.
This violent clash during Holi is not the first in Mauganj, as a similar incident occurred the previous year in the Gadara-Dhaba area, involving individuals from different castes. The history of such conflicts underscores the need for continued vigilance and preventive measures to ensure community safety during festive occasions.
