Public sector enterprise Visakhapatnam Steel Plant has returned to profitability with backing from the Central and Andhra Pradesh governments, officials informed Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, reported a profit of Rs 54 crore in January 2026, marking significant progress in a year-and-a-half.
The Chief Minister conducted a review meeting on the plant’s advancements at the Secretariat, where Union Steel Ministry Secretary Sandeep Poundrik, Vizag Steel Plant CMD Manish Raj Gupta, Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand, and other state officials were present. The plant’s CMD highlighted that with ongoing support from both governments, it has surpassed previous losses and is now producing 19,401 tonnes of hot metal daily.
Officials updated the Chief Minister on the plant’s enhanced production, attributing it to the full operation of all three blast furnaces. They mentioned a remarkable increase in capacity utilization to 94%, compared to just 45% the previous year. With state aid in areas like taxes and utilities, the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant has transitioned from financial losses to profitability, aided by Rs 11,440 crore assistance from the Central government.
Acknowledging this progress, the Chief Minister urged officials to implement new policies across departments to further fortify the steel plant’s success. He emphasized that this achievement was a collective effort involving workers, employees, officials, and support from both the Central and state governments.
