The death toll from the warehouse roof collapse in Kolkata’s Taratala area has reached five, with more individuals still trapped under the debris. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited the injured workers at SSKM Hospital, where 20 individuals are receiving treatment, with two in critical condition. Rescue operations are ongoing to save those still trapped, with around 12 to 15 people estimated to be under the collapsed structure.
Adhikari expressed gratitude to the rescue teams and mentioned that some workers are alive and in contact with the authorities. He also highlighted that the incident was a result of a faulty building plan for the warehouse, with action to be taken against the owners. Work at all under-construction commercial properties in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation area will be suspended until July 31 for safety audits and inspections.
The collapse occurred during the afternoon, trapping around 40 to 50 workers. Various teams including Civil Defence, Indian Army, NDRF, Fire Brigade, Kolkata Police, and KMC are involved in the rescue efforts. Hydraulic cranes and gas cutters are being used to clear the collapsed structure, with a focus on stabilizing the site to prevent further collapses.
