Guwahati, Aug 14 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday paid tribute to the victims of the 1947 Partition and said the country must never forget the suffering and loss caused by the division of India.
Marking Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, CM Sarma said the scars left by the Partition continue to remain part of the nation’s collective memory and called for a pledge to ensure that such tragedies are never repeated.
“We will never forget the scars of the forced partition which the Muslim League inflicted on Maa Bharti, taking the lives of countless innocent souls,” CM Sarma said in a social media post.
The Chief Minister said Partition Horrors Remembrance Day provides an opportunity to remember those who lost their lives during one of the most traumatic episodes in the history of the Indian subcontinent.
He said the nation should remember all those who laid down their lives and ensure that the sacrifices and suffering of countless people are not forgotten.
The Partition of 1947 resulted in one of the largest mass migrations in modern history, as millions of people were displaced amid widespread communal violence. Families were separated, homes were abandoned, and communities across the newly created borders faced immense suffering.
CM Sarma’s remarks came as the country observed Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, an occasion dedicated to recalling the human cost of Partition and honouring those who suffered during the period.
The Chief Minister also shared an image carrying the message that the scars of Partition remain alive, underlining the importance of remembering the painful experiences associated with the division.
He called upon people to remember the victims and remain committed to protecting the nation from forces that could threaten its unity and security.
The observance has been used in recent years to highlight the suffering of ordinary people during Partition, including those who were forced to leave their ancestral homes and rebuild their lives elsewhere.
CM Sarma’s message also carried a broader appeal for national unity and vigilance, urging people to draw lessons from the past.
As India remembers the human tragedy of Partition, the Chief Minister said the sacrifices of those who lost their lives should remain a permanent part of the country’s collective memory.
