West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the suspension of five police officers involved in controversies and accused of partisan behavior during the previous Trinamool Congress regime led by Mamata Banerjee. The suspended officers include an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer named Koteshwar Rao, who served as the Superintendent of the Diamond Harbour Police District. Rao was known to be a close confidant of Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
Adhikari revealed the names of the other four suspended officers during his address at the West Bengal Assembly’s extended budget session. The officers suspended are Moazzem Hossain, Subarna Dutta Chowdhury, Sadhan Pandey, and Amalendu Biswas, who held various positions in different police stations across the state. The Chief Minister emphasized the misuse of police during the previous government’s tenure and expressed concerns over the sentiments of those following Sanatan Dharma being hurt.
In a separate incident earlier this year, Adhikari suspended three IPS officers for alleged dereliction of duty related to a case of rape and murder at a state-run hospital in Kolkata in 2024. The suspended officers were Vineet Kumar Goyal, Abhishek Gupta, and Indira Mukherjee, with a departmental probe initiated against them. Recently, the suspension period of these IPS officers was extended by 120 days. Adhikari also made a statement on social media, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to zero tolerance for corruption in governance.
