Talod taluka in Gujarat’s Sabarkantha district is gaining attention for its Navalpur Gram Panchayat, which stands out as a model of women’s empowerment in local governance. The entire panchayat, from the sarpanch to all members, is composed of women who were elected unanimously. This collective leadership has led to rapid improvements in education, healthcare, and sanitation infrastructure within the village.
Under the women-led administration, Navalpur now features well-maintained internal roads, CCTV surveillance for security, household tap-water connections, and an operational sewage treatment system, showcasing a comprehensive approach to civic development.
Kinjal Jhala, the Deputy Sarpanch of Navalpur, emphasizes the panchayat’s commitment to ensuring that all developmental efforts directly benefit the villagers, particularly women and children. The village has also made strides in sustainable energy and agriculture, with rooftop solar panels installed in every household, contributing to the village’s energy self-sufficiency.
Local farmers have embraced drip irrigation, while women are being encouraged to engage in animal husbandry for additional income. Efforts to enhance water storage include beautifying the village pond, and the establishment of an Oxygen Park with 10,000 trees, supported by the Forest Department, is enhancing green cover and environmental well-being.
Members of the Gram Panchayat, Hasumati Patel and Gayatri Patel, highlight that these initiatives are not only fostering financial stability among women but also fortifying the village’s ecological resilience in the long term. The Navalpur CSC Centre has become a symbol of progress, offering over 180 government and digital services to residents.
Through their collective wisdom, patience, cooperation, and transparency, the women of Navalpur’s Samaras Panchayat have become a source of inspiration throughout Gujarat, illustrating how empowered local leadership can bring tangible change to communities.
