A garment factory in Bangladesh’s Gazipur district faced criticism after more than 100 workers fell ill from consuming its supplied water. The affected workers, from Dressman Limited in the Chandra area of Kaliakoir upazila, experienced symptoms like vomiting, stomach pain, and dizziness. They were promptly taken to nearby health facilities for treatment.
The incident caused panic among employees as the number of affected workers increased. The Justice Makers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) expressed serious concerns over the situation, emphasizing the importance of a safe work environment and access to clean drinking water. JMBF highlighted the legal and moral obligations of the government and employers in ensuring worker safety.
Shahanur Islam, the Founder President of JMBF, condemned the incident, calling it alarming and tragic. He stressed that providing safe drinking water at workplaces is a fundamental responsibility of every employer. JMBF urged the Bangladeshi government to promptly investigate the incident and take legal action against any party found responsible for negligence or wrongdoing.
The human rights organization also called for enhanced monitoring and enforcement of occupational health and safety standards, including access to clean water, in all industrial establishments in Bangladesh. It emphasized the need to align with international labor standards to prevent such incidents in the future.
