Over 400 athletes from more than 60 countries will participate in the inaugural World Yogasana Championships (WYC) 2026 at the EKA Arena from June 4 to 8. This five-day event will mark the first global championship for Yogasana as a competitive sport, with participants from countries like the United States, Ghana, Kenya, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Uzbekistan.
Supported by various entities including the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Ministry of Ayush, and the Sports Authority of India, the championship aims to establish Yogasana as an internationally recognized sporting discipline. India will host a 122-member contingent, competing across six age-categories for both men and women.
The competition will include individual events, artistic events, and traditional group categories. For the first time at the global level, an electronic scoring system will be introduced to enhance transparency and consistency in judging. The championship will be overseen by 32 international judges and 51 national judges.
Yogasana Bharat president Udit Sheth expressed excitement about hosting the championship, highlighting its significance in promoting Yogasana globally. Dr. Jaideep Arya, the World Yogasana general secretary, described the event as a pivotal moment in the evolution of Yogasana as a global sport, emphasizing the athleticism, discipline, and artistry it represents.
The championship will kick off with an opening ceremony and will be broadcast live on Doordarshan and streamed on the broadcaster’s YouTube channel from June 4 to 8.
