Wrestler Meenakshi Goyat has defended her decision to challenge the outcome of the women’s 53kg final at the Asian Games selection trials. Despite losing by a narrow margin of 3-2 to Antim Panghal, Meenakshi expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict, citing her strong performance in the title bout.
Meenakshi’s complaint, acknowledged by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), stems from her belief that she wrestled well enough in the final match. She has requested a review of the decision and stated that she will accept whatever conclusion the concerned authorities reach.
The 53kg category at the trials gained significant attention, particularly due to Meenakshi’s victory over former World Championship medallist Vinesh Phogat before her loss to Antim in the final. Meenakshi expressed her long-standing desire to compete against Vinesh, highlighting her confidence during the bout.
Reflecting on her performance, Meenakshi acknowledged making an error that allowed Vinesh to score points but emphasized her resilience in fighting back. Despite facing personal challenges, including financial difficulties and her mother’s battle with cancer, Meenakshi remains dedicated to her wrestling journey.
WFI President Sanjay Singh confirmed the acceptance of Meenakshi’s complaint but stated that Antim Panghal would continue as India’s selected wrestler in the 53kg category for the upcoming Asian Games in Japan.
