As the 12th International Day of Yoga approaches in the United States, India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, highlighted the widespread presence of yoga studios across American cities. From Washington, DC, to New York and Chicago, Indian diplomatic missions are gearing up for events promoting “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” emphasizing the physical and mental benefits of yoga. The Indian Embassy in Washington will host a major celebration at the Lincoln Memorial on June 19, inviting the public to join in the largest yoga session of the year.
Reflecting on the global acceptance of yoga, Kwatra mentioned that the International Day of Yoga, established by a UN resolution in 2014, has garnered support from 175 countries. He emphasized yoga as a significant part of India’s cultural heritage, connecting the body, mind, and soul harmoniously. Kwatra noted that yoga’s universal appeal transcends borders, resonating with people from diverse cultures and beliefs.
This year’s International Day of Yoga theme, “Yoga for Healthy Aging,” underscores yoga’s role in promoting vitality, resilience, and holistic health. The event will feature the participation of Padma Shri H.R. Nagendra, a renowned yoga scholar and mentor to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Nagendra will lead key Yoga Day activities in New York, including the iconic Times Square gathering, a prominent global Yoga Day event.
The Consulate General of India in New York is collaborating with the Times Square Alliance for the annual “Mind Over Madness Yoga” program, with Ruchika Lal from the Art of Living Foundation leading the session. The International Day of Yoga, observed on June 21, coinciding with the summer solstice, has evolved into a successful global cultural initiative since its inception in 2015. Millions worldwide now participate in Yoga Day events, showcasing yoga as a powerful tool for soft power and cultural exchange.
